Mentoring in Maryland
During the past decade, the mentoring movement has gained momentum
in Maryland and across the country. Enriching the lives
of both youth and adults, elementary, middle and high school
students are mentored through a network of more than 300
programs statewide. Mentoring programs focus on helping
youth improve scholastically, gain valuable workplace skills,
and build competence and character. Research has shown that
mentored youth often have better attitudes toward school
and a reduction in substance abuse and other negative behaviors.
(Child Trends Research Study), therefore it is an important strategy for successful
youth development.
The Maryland Mentoring Partnership is “mentoring central”
for Maryland. To help close the gap between the number of youth
who need mentors and the number of volunteers who make the commitment,
MMP provides leadership, training, advocacy and a rallying point
for providers across the state.
Since 1996, the work of MMP has been focused on recruitment in
four distinct sectors: Corporate, Government, Faith and Community.
With a vigorous sector-based recruiting strategy and targeted technical
assistance, MMP has been the catalyst for the rapid growth of mentoring
in Maryland. Thanks to partnerships and strong coalitions, MMP has
been a driving force to increase the number of caring, supportive
mentor-mentee relationships in Maryland from 10,000 in 1996 to more
than 45,000 in 2006. Each sector has valuable assets that contribute
to the creation of quality programs.
